Amiga

Jay Miner Interview Pasadena, September 1992. "The story starts in the early 1980`s with a company not originally called Amiga, but Hi Toro, which was started by Dave Morris, our president, but before all that I used to work with Atari and I wanted to do a 68000 machine with them. We had just finished the Atari 800 box and they were not about to spend another umpteen dollars on research for a 16-bit machine and the processor chip itself cost $100 apiece. RAM was also real expensive and you need twice as much. They couldn't see the writing on the wall and they just said "No", so I quit!". Jay Miner, father of the Amiga.

ARM-based CPU's are very popular and are mostly used in handheld devices because of their low power consumption. They are cheap to manufacture and exist in big all-in-one chips that include timers, LCD controller and other I/O. The instruction set is also very nice, although a divide instruction would be handy sometimes.

The ’64 was a much more capable machine. The ’64 came with 64Kb of memory and hardware-support for graphical sprites. It was also completely incompatible with the VIC. Initially however the ’64 was an expensive machine, and with price cuts sales of the VIC continued. Eventually the price of the ’64 dropped, and it was over for the VIC. By Mid-1984 the VIC’s demise was a fait accompli.

  • GameCube Innards Review The Nintendo GameCube is a remarkable well designed system, both internally and out. It's tightly packed with goodness, easy to disassemble, and features many pleasing design decisions. Some things I don't understand - no RGB. It should have been readily available anyway, why not include it? Also, why doesn't the damn thing play music CDs like every other console ever made? 3' music singles are very popular in Japan, but Nintendo... Well, who knows what they were thinking? Check it out - there's a 2nd layer of data on the GC discs. A ring around the center of the disc can be seen when you tilt the disc just right. For a review of the system itself, please see the Review over on AtariLabs.

GameCube PSO Exploit

  • Darkfader NGC PSO Exploit You can hack a bit around with the webbrowser in PSO if you know how to setup a DNS server. It is restricted to *.playsega.com but you can use some webserver script to rewrite html pages. The gameserver address is pso-gc1.pso.playsega.com and uses different ports for 50/60 Hz mode. To use the PSO remote exploit with the GCM loader, you don't have to change the IP of your PC. Simply run netsh interface ip add address 'Local Area Connection' 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0 or use the control panels in Windows 5+. ParadoX' loader has IP settings, so you can use that too. Don't forget to set NIC into half-duplex mode (100 mbit should work) with some loaders. Don't download or play illegal games. Happy hacking!

NES

  • Everything2.com 2A03 The 6502 architecture was very common in 1980s microcomputers such as Commodore 64, Atari 800, and Apple II, etc. The 2A03 is a version of 6502, used only in the NES and Famicom game consoles, that lacks 6502 decimal mode, has extra pins connected to sound and the joypads, and adds 21 memory-mapped registers that control those devices, along with one for sprite DMA. The NES motherboard clocks the 2A03 at 21.47727MHz on NTSC consoles (Famicom, US NES) or 26.601171MHz for PAL consoles (European NES); the 2A03's external interface divides this by 12 (NTSC) or 16 (PAL) to produce a 1.79 MHz clock signal for the 6502 core.
  • GRAND THEFT tendo Grand Theftendo is a new homebrew game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It is a tribute to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto III running on the 8 bit, 256x240 resolution, 2 bit colour x 2 bit palette, 1.79 Mhz system, written entirely in 6502 Assembly Language!
  • Kevin Horton Aaah, the NES. One of the more fun consoles to hack around on. Lots of undocumented things to bite you on your arse. :-) However, most things can be figured out with a little patience and persistance. This was definitely the Little Console That Could; released at a time when america was in its biggest videogame slump. No one wanted to play them any more, stores refused to sell them... but Nintendo won out and sales exploded.
  • NES DEV Parodius

  • NES Programming E2 In 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), an 8-bit game console. It was a slight revision of the Famicom console Nintendo had previously released in Japan. It had a 2A03 CPU that used 6502 instructions familiar to Apple II and Commodore 64 asm coders with 22 extra registers for sound and I/O. A custom PPU could display up to 25 simultaneous colors (or more). It only had 4 KB of RAM and could only see 32 KB of program ROM and 8 KB of graphics tile ROM at once, but mapper hardware such as 74LS161 chips on CNROM and UNROM boards and the MMC1 and MMC3 ASICs could 'turn the pages' of the ROM and expand the capabilities of the system.
  • NESHLA homepage NESHLA is an assembler for the Nintendo NES which gives the features of high level languages such as C without sacrificing any efficiency or speed. It structures and simplifies coding the NES, while still using assembly language. Compilers are inefficient for low end systems such as the NES. Even with optimizers, they would never produce code for fast action games or capable of tapping deep into the NES. It's the best of both worlds!
  • The Devento The first NES development device I built (other than EPROM devcarts), was a simple cable which connected the NES' second controller port to the PC, along with a special RAM cart to upload code to. It worked nicely, and required no modification to the NES itself. However, it was rather slow (about 1KByte per second -- note, I used to just say '1K', but too many people seem to be confused by this!). I made a second version with the use of a parallel to serial shift IC, and was able to get it up to 9KBytes (or 72Kbits in cheat-speak, heh) per second. With a buffer and some more circuitry, I could surely get 20KB/s at least, but that still wasn't fast enough for me. I wanted to replace the use of emulators with development on hardware.

  • Emulation64 Network About the Emulation64 Network The story of Emulation64 starts back in early 1999, when Martin decided to start his first emulation site. The site didn't reach more than a few people each day, and that's when he did like most other sites are doing - a link exchange. He contacted Stian, founder of another N64 emulation site. Stian agreed to the link exchange, and this is how the two came in contact at first. Not much later, Stian asked Martin if the latter would be kind enough to update his site during a two week vacation he had. Martin though about it a bit, and was unsure. Somehow, and I can't remember who it was who came up with the idea, the two Scandinavians, together with Luigi from the Unofficial UltraHLE page, formed a much more comprehensive and serious site. The major gaming site Glide Underground showed interest in hosting the N64 emulation only site, and on launch day (June 7, 1999), it had more than 1000 visitors.
  • Nintendo 64 Resource Page This page is completely dedicated in preserving and providing info on a great system, bound to death in year 2001 by Nintendo because selling 'only' 1000 units in Japan in his last weeks of life. Some of the material contained in here is not my work at all, or it has been heavily modified by me without asking the original authors. That's right, so many times I've tried to contact no longer existing mail addresses or had no reply at all. Some others gave me persmissions with restrictions (link directly, do not edit) and then their sites disappeared completely carrying along all the info they were providing. The system is pretty much dead right now, and I down't want to lose all what it meant to me in those old great days of fun, and this is all I want to preserve. Thus, please don't ask me to remove parts of this site as it doesn't steal anybody's work, credit has been given where it had to be given. If you are an author and you think I didn't gave you credit please drop me a mail. Contributions are always welcome.

  • Computermuseum VIDEOPAC It sounds pretty unreal, the name 'Philips Bulb Factory' on cartridges for a game console. But it was reality, al least with the first cartridges for the Videopac, also known as G7000. A console with which the Dutch firm Philips had reasonable success in Europe at the end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties. The American equivalent, the Odyssey 2 manufactured by Philips' subsidiary Magnavox, even took the third place for some time, behind the Mattel Intellivision and the Atari VCS 2600.

PONG consoles

  • Welcome to PONG-Story! The video game history started in a strange and complicated way and it is important to avoid confusions with what happened in the 1950s and 1960s. The real video game history started with Ralph Baer as early as 1951. One very important thing to remember is how the video game has been defined in the 1960s before modern tehnologies allowed video games to be played on computers.

ROBOTRON Z1013

  • Computermuseum ROBOTRON Robotron was a famous computer brand in the former communist countries in Eastern Europe. The company in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) not only manufactured computers for the GDR, but also for other countries in the Soviet bloc. Like often in the GDR the consumer didn't come at the first place. Although it was the intention that Robotron should manufacture computers for consumers too, the companies ('Volkseigene Betriebe') were considered far more important, so that hardly any computer was available for the consumer market.

TEXAS TI 99/4

  • Computermuseum TI 99/4 Big players on the computer market shuddered when chip manufacturer Texas Instruments in 1979 announced to come with an own home computer. Texas Instruments at that time was the number one among the chip manufacturers. Competitors feared that Texas Instruments could make a good deal because it could equip its computers with its own chips.
  • Computermuseum TI 99/4a The Texas Instruments 99/4A changed my life. It was the first home computer I came in touch with in the early eighties, through a friend from high school. With admiration I followed the piece of magic he performed with this machine; I'd never seen anything like that before. Most amazing was the moment when this computer started to talk through a Speech Synthesizer and when even more mysterious things happened through the modem, a device in which one had to put the receiver.

  • .XBE File Format 1.1 This document is, afaik, the most precise .XBE documentation out there (other than official Microsoft documentation). The reason for this is the simple fact that I have done a lot of work with this type of file, and I am very familiar with the format. .XBE files are very similar to .EXE, so you won't have much of a problem using them if you have any sort of experience with .EXE files. Well, here we go..
  • An In-Depth Look into Win32 good understanding of the Portable Executable (PE) file format leads to a good understanding of the operating system.
  • AnandTech Hardware and games go hand in hand; since it is the gaming industry which drives a significant portion of hardware sales, at least for enthusiast users. Companies like NVIDIA wouldn't have a reason to put out $300 and $400 graphics cards if it weren't for gamers. But although PC gamers have taken the lime light recently, every true PC gamer and most PC users in general can trace their roots back to the earliest of computer-entertainment devices: videogame consoles.

The differences are especially important for instance when modifying the Linux FAT driver to support FATX.
